  • Dispute lead to secession & it brought a war in which the northern & western states & territories fought to preserve the union
  • South fought to establish southern independence as a new confederation of states under its own constitution

STATES RIGHTS

  • States rights refers to the struggle between federal government & individual states over political power

SECTIONALISM

  • The north & south were separated from being slave states & non-slave states

BATTLE OF FORT SUMTER

  • Was fought on April 12-14 in1861
  • 33-hour bombardment by confederates
  • Civil war had begun

BATTLE OF ANTIETAM

  • Bloodiest single day of fighting in American history
  • Lincoln issued emancipation proclamation

BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG

  • Turning point of civil war for the union
  • had the momentum before it was confederate

BATTLE OF VICKSBURG

  • U.S Grant surrendered
  • Union victory
  • Cut confederacy in half

EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION

  • Lincoln issues after Union victory
  • Proclaims all slaves should be free

SURRENDER AT APPOMATTOX COURTHOUSE

  • Lee made one last stand but was overcome by a much larger Union force
  • Surrendered to U.S Grant
