  • Allowed California to join the nation, and helped recapture runaway slaves
  • It made northerners mad about recapturing slaves

Kansas-Nebraska act
1854
It divided the Nebraska territory into the Nebraska and the Kansas territories. Allowed territories to vote on whether it would be a free or a slave state.

BLEEDING KANSAS

  • 1855
  • people rushed into kansas to earn enough votes to make it a free/slave state
  • mobs attacked the cities of lawrence, and killed proslavery people

Uncles Tom's Cabin
An antislavery novel written in 1852. It helped lay the groundwork for the civil war.

Fred Scott decision
1856
A slave taken into free states by his master, he declared that he was, so he sued for his freedom. But they said he was not a U.S. citizen, so he could not sue in U.S. courts.

Harper's ferry
1859
John Brown captured weapons
from Harper's ferry, to arm slaves for battle, but no slaves joined him. He was captured by the U.S., and executed.

Election of 1860
Lincoln and Breckinredge were fighting for presidency.The north wanted Lincoln and the south wanted Breckinrige. The north had more people so Lincoln won.
