SLAVERY
-the south Thought that the abolition of slavery would destroy the economy. The north felt slavery should be abolished for moral reasons.

States rights
-southern states claimed the right to have slaves through states rights.

Sectionalism
-the south seceded from the union didn't want Abraham Lincoln to free their slaves.

BATTLE OF FORT SUMTER

  • Fort Sumter was bombarded and surrendered.
  • After was the secession of seven states.
  • The Confederacy won.
  • "They have started a war that they wish they could've avoided."
  • "We must protect our right to keep slaves."

BATTLE OF ANTIETAM

  • 23,000 men fell making it the bloodiest day in American history.
  • The union won.
  • "We will fight to free slaves no matter what the costs."
  • "Lincoln will never take away our slaves."

BATTLE AT GETTYSBURG

  • This battle prevented lee's second invasion of the north.
  • The union won.
  • "We stopped the confederacy now- and we'll stop them overall.
  • "The union may have won this battle but we will never give up."

BATTLE OF VICKSBURG

  • The union once again had control over lower Mississippi
  • The union won
  • "Mississippi is ours, and we will win."
  • "We cannot let the north advance further."

EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION

  • This proclamation issued by Abraham Lincoln freed slaves.
  • "We have been blessed by God with the power of freedom."

SURRENDER AT APPOMATTOX COURT HOUSE

  • The surrender by Robert E. Lee set the stage for the end of the civil war.
  • "This tedious war fought for freedom will finally be ended."
  • "Our economy is sure to be ruined, and our lives will deteriorate without slaves."

ABRAHAM LINCOLN

  • The union general

ROBERT E. LEE

  • The confederate general
  • "I will do what I need to to support what I believe in."

THOMAS "STONEWALL" JACKSON

  • Was a confederate general.
  • Served under Robert E. Lee.
  • He led troops at manassas and Antietam .
  • He was the best known confederate commander (after Robert e. Lee.)

PHILIP BAZZAR

  • Was an ordinary American seaman.
  • Received the Medal of Honor for valor in the battle for fort fisher.

WILLIAM CARNEY

  • Was an African American soldier. (Sergeant)
  • He is considered to be the first African American to receive a Medal of Honor.
  • He received the Medal of Honor for his gallantry during the Battle of Fort Wagner.

THE ASSASSINATION

  • Abraham Lincoln was shot in ford's theatre.
  • He was the first American president to be assassinated.
  • He was killed by John Wilkes booth.
  • "Our leader has been lost, but the war has still been won."
  • "Lincoln lose his life, as he destroyed our lives."
