SLAVERY

  • Slaves where a major part of the southern economy.
  • Abraham Lincoln became president and he disapproved of slavery.
  • He realized that if slavery stayed in the U.S.the country would never work together.
  • So his only choice was for every state to be a slave state or for no slaves at all.

The main focus for was if the federal government was allowed to abolish slavery.

SECTIONALISM

  • Sectionalism was between the north and south.
  • Reasons vary such as representation the north and south wanted to pass laws that benefit their area.

BATTLE OF FORT SUMTER

  • The battle is significant because it was the first battle of the civil war.
  • South won because the north surrender.
  • "Our Southern brethren have done grievously, the."— Major Robert Anderson
  • Blood will pour and victory will be ours.

BATTLE OF ANTIETAM

  • The Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest battle of the civil war.
  • Union victory.
  • Men have shed so much blood but we are to honor those who fought for what's right. -Union
  • So many southern brethren's have died from the soldiers of the tyrant.-confederacy

BATTLE OF GATTYSBURG

  • The battle of gattysburg is significant because it stopped Robert Lee invasion of the north.
  • Union victory
  • Hurray! We have saved ourselves and the future against our brothers. -Union
  • We have failed to conquer the north but we will win this war. -confederacy

BATTLE OF VICKSBURG

  • This battle is significant because it was the "key" to ending the war.
  • Union victory
  • We have found the key to the chest of gold. -Union
  • The have us under lock and key we must stay strong and not waver against them. -confederacy

Emancipation PROCLAMATION

  • The proclamation freed the slaves in the south so they can fight in the army.
  • Finally I can breathe and know the feeling of freedom the sweetest taste.

SURRENDER AT APPOMATTOX COURT HOUSE

  • The surrender of Robert E. Lee and his troops was significant because it ended the war.
  • APPOMATTOX COURT-HOUSE, VA. April 9, 1865 General R. E. LEE: In accordance with the substance of my letter to you of the 8th instant, I propose to receive the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia on the following terms, to wit: Rolls of all the officers and men to be made in duplicate, one copy to be given to an officer to be designated by me, the other to be retained by such officer or officers as you may designate. The officers to give their individual paroles not to take up arms against the Government of the United States until properly exchanged; and each company or regimental commander sign a like parole for the men of their commands. The arms, artillery, and public property to be parked and stacked, and turned over to the officers appointed by me to receive them. This will not embrace the side-arms of the officers, nor their private horses or baggage. This done, each officer and man will be allowed to return to his home, not to be disturbed by U. S. authority so long as they observe their paroles and the laws in force where they may reside. U.S. GRANT, Lieutenant-General.

GRANT: I have received your letter of this date containing the terms of surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia as proposed by you. As they are substantially the same as those expressed in your letter of the 8th instant, they are accepted. I will proceed to designate the proper officers to carry the stipulations into effect. R.   • Philip was the 1st Hispanic to receive the Medal of Honor for distinguishing himself during the battle of fort fisher.

WILLIAM CARNEY

  • William was the first African American to receive the Medal of Honor for the defeat at Fort Wagner in South Carolina. He served 54 years in the Massachusetts regiment.
