EXCUTIVE ORDER 9981

The executive order 9981 was issued on July 26, 1948 by President Truman. It was to abolish racial discrimination in the United States Army and was what eventually led to the end of segregation.

The orders statement:

"It is hereby declared to be the policy of the President that there shall be equality of treatment and opportunity for all persons in the armed services without regard to race, color, religion or national origin. This policy shall be put into effect as rapidly as possible, having due regard to the time required to effectuate any necessary changes without impairing efficiency or morale."

BROWN VS. BOARD OF EDUCATION

This case started when Linda Brown was denied acceptance to an elementary school in Topeka, KS where she lived. Brown won the case when the jury decide that having different schools was in equal. It was ruled a violation of the equal protection clause in the fourteenth amendment.

EMMITT TILL

Fourteen year old Emmitt was from Chicago, and went down to Mississippi to visit some relatives. He when into the local general store and was accused of flirting with a lady there. He when missing and was found in the Tallahatchie River beaten leached and dead. He was returned to his mother in Chicago and a huge funeral was held.

ROSA PARKS

On December 1, 1955 Rosa Parks did not obey the bus driver when she was told to give up her seat and give it to a white person. When other people did this they got thrown off the but but that day Rosa got arrested. She became a huge milestone in the civil rights movement.

SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

The S.C.L.C. Was know as the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The president was Martian Luther King jr. This organization was for African Americans civil rights. It's purpose was to help get black people equal to white people.

LITTLE ROCK NINE

The Little Rock Nine was a group of African American students that were enrolled in Little Rock Central High School.There were thousand of people waiting to watch them go into the school. They all showed up to their first day of school and were denied entrance into the school.

SNCC


The SNCC know as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, were a group of americans that wanted change but refused to be violent about it. When they would walk down the street the would get hit and object would be thrown at them and they would not fight back because they were apart of the group. It was very Painful.

FREEDOM RIDERS

In 1961, A group of people called the Freedom Riders were people who wanted change. They would ride from state to state trying to make this happen. Even when there bus got blown up the still found a way to put themselves out there.

MARCH ON WASHINGTON


On august 28, 1963 Over 250,000 people came to march on the ground of the capital. It was the first ever march shown on national T.V. The people want to be seen as equal. The want to be about to have a good job and to Live in a nice home and to just be free. Thats what all those people were there that day to try and get.

VOTING RIGHTS ACT

Voting rights act : The voting rights act of 1965 helped let black americans to vote. They Had just as much right now as a white guy to go in and vote. Literacy test and other thing that made it impossible to blacks to vote became illegal.
