About You

What do you teach? What is your experience with citizen science? What do you want to know?

Snapshot Serengeti

My first encounter with Cit Sci was reading about it in an ed tech newsletter, then trying out Snapshot Serengeti in 2015: https://www.snapshotserengeti.org/

Discovering Citizen Science 2015

I taught a 3-week citizen science course for rising 3rd and 4th grade students during the summer of 2015.

What does a scientist look like?

Untitled Slide

kids probably won't have the same stereotype of what a scientist looks like as adults- anyone can be a scientist!

Citizen Science means
we can all be scientists!

Citizen science means we can all be scientists, and can contribute to real research.

What is Citizen Science?

What is Citizen Science?

"Citizen science is all about when a (person) has too much work to do by himself or herself, they have to ask a citizen to help." -3rd grade student

Untitled Slide

"Citizen science is when normal people help scientists gather information to figure out something that scientists want to know." -4th grade student

Types of Cit Sci

  • Data Analysis
  • Data Collection
  • Transcription

Sorting seafloor images

Imagine the need to organize thousands of times this many images.

Anyone can participate

My daughter and I like to take walks and use the iNaturalist app.

My husband has made over 9,000 classifications since I introduced him to cit sci (mostly on his train commute).

Hanny's Voorwerp

In 2008, a Danish schoolteacher named Hanny Van Arkel discovered a new type of galaxy object never before seen, via Galaxy Zoo, Zooniverse project in which volunteers are asked questions about galaxy images.

"As a volunteer on these websites, both you and your students can become citizen scientists and citizen researchers, participating in real science and other research."

Zooniverse offers mainly information analysis/categorization projects.

NGSS and Citizen Science

from "NGSS & Citizen Science" from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology: http://www.birdsleuth.org/ngss-and-citizen-science/

NGSS and citizen science both offer structure for achieving the exploratory nature of science in the classroom.

For most of the subjects shown in Zooniverse projects, the researchers don't know the correct answer and that's why they need your help.

Getting Started

Classroom Applications

A few ways that we expanded on the cit sci projects.

Scientist Visits

and Skype sessions
We were fortunate to have 3 scientist "visits" during our summer session. I highly recommend getting in touch with scientists from any project you are planning on using in your classroom; they are generally happy to connect with their citizens!

We did a few practice Skype sessions first: one with another class in our building, one as a Mystery Skype with a class in a different state.

Chicago Wildlife Watch

Plankton Portal

Save the plankton, Breathe Freely!

Snapshot Serengeti

Our trip to the zoo: Snapshot Serengeti comparisons

Throughout

  • Maps
  • Wonders and Tweets
  • Blog-students too!
  • Relevant books
