What Do I Know?

  • Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday celebrated on May 5th.
  • It celebrates Mexico defeating the French in a war.
  • Many people across the globe celebrate it; however, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more in the U.S. than in Mexico.
  • People have fiestas in which they party, dance , eat traditional food, bust pinatas, and have parades.

History Hunters

  • Benito Jaurez- the president of Mexico.
  • Porfirio Diaz- A Mexican soldier and former president of Mexico.
  • Ignacio Zaragoza- the General that led the Mexican troops.
  • Napoleon III- the Emperor of France
  • Maximillian- the person who tried to be the Emperor of Mexico.
  • The Marquis de Radepont- a French diplomat.
  • CINCO DE MAYO IS NOT INDEPENDENCE DAY!!!
  • The French entered Maxico form the Gulf and marched 600 miles to Puebla where 6,500 French soldiers invaded 4,500 Mexican soldiers. Mexico ended up winning the battle by killing them in their sleep. After that, Napoleon III got angry, so he sent 30,000 more troops to Mexico. They ended up taking over Mexico City for three years until the U.S. assisted Mexico. Together, they expelled the French away form Mexico.

Mole is a sauce made with chilis, nuts, seeds, and vegetables. It is usually poured over different foods.

Flan is a Mexicna sponge cake with a sweet or savory filling. Some flan has a caramel topping.

Chorizo is a Mexican sausage. It is sometimes put on tortillas.

Chilaquiles is a sliced, fried tortilla with a tomato sauce and cheese on top.

Plantain chips is a fruit (similar to a banana) cut into small circles and fried.

Modern Music and Moves

  • Some common topics in Mexican music are love, betrayal, death, politics, heroes, and occasionally animals.
  • Mariachi music is a musical ensemble that originates from Mexico. They perform songs about religion and other events. Mariachi music includes many instruments.
  • Violins, trumpets, horns, maracas, flutes, and guitars are all used in Mariachi music.
  • Some Mariachi groups are El Mariachi Bronx and El Mariachi de Pueblo.
  • Some dances that they have are the Hat Dance and the Jarabe Tapatio dance.

  • Cinco de Mayo celebrates victory, Mexican culture and heritage, and the fact that a weak militia conquered a strong military.
  • There were 4,500 Mexican soldiers and 6,500 French.
  • Now, where the battle was fought, there is a park with a statue of General Ignacio.
  • An important battle cry was.... Viva Mexico! Respnse: Viva!

Typical Traditions

  • Parades usually have a plethora of people, dancers, floats, Mariachis, bands, and Mexican food.
  • Many will dance, play games, eat, sing, and spend time with family.
  • Women wear long, colorful dresses and men wear black Mexican tuxedos with cummerbunds.
  • Some decorations that they have are brightly colored tissue paper flowers and banners.
