Placement of Examples

  • illustrate or explain as well as unify ideas
  • relate to and illustrate the main idea of the paragraph... usually expressed in the topic sentence
  • add detail and explanation for any simple statements you make

Signal Phrases

  • tells the reader what is to come
  • helps to let the reader know what type of example you will be using
  • comparison-use a signal phrase such as similarly or like
  • contrast -use words such as unlike or in contrast
