CHINESE FESTIVALS!!

ABOUT THE SPRING FESTIVAL

  • The spring festival falls on the 1st day of the 1st lunar month
  • This festival is important to Chinese people b/c it's a time when all family members get together
  • This festival originated in the Shang Dynasty

FOODS PEOPEL EAT AT THE SPRING FESTIVAL

  • On the 8th day of the 12th lunar month,many families make LABA PORRIDGE
  • Laba porridge is a delicious kind of porridge made with glutinous rice, millet
  • ,seeds of Job's tears, jujube berries, lotus seeds, beans, longan, and gingko

NORTHERN CHINA SPRING FESTIVAL FOOD

  • People in northern china will eat jiaozi (dumplings)

SOUTHERN CHINA SPRING FESTIVAL FOOD

  • Souther Chinese eat nian gao
  • Nian gao is a new year cake made of glutinous rice flour

BUYING THINGS FOR THE SPRING FESTIVAL

  • Everybody goes out to purchase necessities for the new year.
  • Materials not only include: edible oil, rice, flour, chicken,
  • ,duck, fish, and meat but also fruit, candies, and kinds of nuts
  • They also buy decorations, new clothes and shoes for the children
  • As well as gifts for the elderly, friends, and family .

CUSTOMS

  • Before the new year comes, the people completely clean
  • The indoors and outdoors of their home.
  • Then people begin decorating their clean rooms featuring an atmosphere
  • Of rejoicing and festivity

FIREWORKS!!

  • Burning fireworks was once the most typical custom on the spring festival
  • Then it was forbidden in big cities once the gov't took security,noise,
  • and pollution factors into consideration.

DANCING

  • Lion dancing
  • Dragon lantern dancing
  • Lantern festivals
  • And temple fairs will be held for days.

THE MID AUTUMN FESTIVAL

  • The story of how the festival started is that there was a man
  • Named Hou Yi. He was a hero for shooting down nine suns that burned
  • The crops and dire the poverty. Peng Meng was jealous of him. Then one
  • Day he ran into the empress of Heaven Wangmu, and gave him a parcel
  • Of elixir and said one would ascend immediately to heaven & become

CONTINUED…

  • A celestial being. Hou Yi did not want to be away from his wife,
  • So he gave the elixir to her for safe keeping. Latter Hou Yi was hunting
  • When Peng Meng went to his wife and demanded her to give him the elixir
  • She refused and took it herself. Hou Yi came home and heard what happened
  • From the maid servants. He looked up at the sky and called her name.

  • The moon was especially clear and bright and on it was a swaying shadow
  • That was exactly like his wife. Hou Yi had an incense table arranged in the
  • Back garden that his wife loved, and put sweet meats and fresh fruits so
  • She would enjoy.

HOW POEPLE STARTED CELEBRATING!!

  • People heard the story & did the same thing Hou Yi did for his wife
  • They prayed for the wife to have good fortune and peace.
  • The custom of worshiping the moon spread among the people

  • People in different places follow different customs, but
  • All show their love and longing for a better life.

FOODS!😋

  • Moon cakes are eaten to celebrate the mid autumn festival

CHINESE PAINTING!!

CHINESE PAINTING TOOLS

  • The two main mediums used in all Chinese painting and calligraphy
  • are paper and silk.
  • The silk is used for painting and calligraphy is a Chinese invention
  • Pine scoot ink is usually used in Chinese painting
  • Scoot is bound together using many glues, then compressed into sticks

COLORS

  • All colors are mineral pigments ground into a fine powder
  • and suspended in a wet medium that makes colored paint
  • Malachite is for green, azurite for blue, cinnabar for red,
  • the colors will never fade.

BRUSHES!!

  • The brush used has a long handle made of wood or bamboo
  • with animal hairs
  • Fancy brush handles can be ceramic, jade or lacquer
  • The tip can be long, short, thick, thin, stiff, soft.

LANDSCAPES

  • There are 3 genres, landscape, figure painting, and bird & flower painting
  • Landscape paintings are given the place of highest honor for representing
  • the principals of nature.
  • Figure painting brings into focus about man depicted as a tiny spec a midst
  • the creative forces of the universe.
