CHINA

HISTORICAL GEOGRAPHY

  • During 300 B.C. the first emperor conquered Eastern China
  • There was 2 dynasties; the Qin and the Han
  • The Qin was the earliest dynasty, the term Chinese came from the Qin
  • The Han was focused on military and expansion

HISTORICAL GEOGRAPHY CONTINUED

  • In 1215 - 1279 the Mongols conquered China
  • In The 1500's Europeans arrived and traded Opium, Silk and Tea
  • The Portuguese established a trading colony in Macao (South China)
  • Other countries such as the U.K., Germany and France followed the Portugese to China.
  • In 1839 the U.K. declared war on China because of the Opium trade

REGIONS

  • N. China - has city of Nanjing and the Qin Ling language
  • S. China - has Qin Chang range, and the Plateau of Tibet
  • NE. China - has the surrounding rim of Manchurian Plain
  • W. China - local governments, own language and culture, not much life

CLIMATE

  • S. China - humid-tropical
  • N. China - steppe (cooler)
  • NE. China - humid-continental (sever winter)
  • W. China - either dry or cold

RESOURCES

China has many natural resources such as iron, coal, trees, tungsten, tin and small amounts of natural gas and oil.

MAJOR INDUSTRIES

Industries in China include agriculture, fishing, logging, mining, energy production and one of China's biggest money maker, manufacturing.

POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY

China is a communist country, because of that political disputes occur between countries neighboring China.

MAJOR LANDFORMS

  • Plateau of Tibet - elevation is about 13,120 feet
  • Kunlun Mountains - elevation is about 13,120 - 1,640 feet
  • Himalayas - the average elevation is about 29,000 feet

AGRICULTRE

  • First farmers arrived in 5000 B.C., farmed rice near Chang River
  • 1000 years later, agriculture groups formed along the Huang River
  • Some of the crops grown in China are rice, tea and corn
