CONFUCIANISM

  • Def: A belief based on the teachings of Confucious.

  • Confucianism was very influential, but then lost influence because of Buddhism.

  • Def: A religion that started in India.

DAOISM

  • Def: A belief system that looks for harmony with nature and inner feelings.

  • " Daoism was founded by Lao Tzu."
  • The Ying-Yang is the sign for Daoism.

IMPERIAL

  • Def: Related to an empire.
  • (Building the Imperial State, PG 223)
  • "To rule more efficiently, the Tang rulers developed an Imperial state."
  • The Imperial state made it easier to rule.

BUREAUCRACY

  • Def: Government that is divided into many departments.
  • (Chinese Government, PG 224)
  • Each department in a bureaucracy was in charge of a certain job.
  • The fourth bureaucracy was in charge of the Chinese army.

GENGHIS KHAN

  • Def: Genghis Khan was a Mongol leader, and died in 1227.
  • (A Great Leader, The Mongol Empire, PG 233, 234)
  • Genghis Khan's name meant "Universal Ruler."
  • After Genghis died his son, Ogadai came to power.

KUBLAI KHAN

  • Def: Kublai was Genghis' grandson who became Mongol ruler in 1260.

  • Kublai Khan was the first ruler to control all of China.
  • Kublai Khan was a very powerful leader because he ruled China for many years.

MONGOL ASCENDANCY

  • Def: When the Mongols made trade routes safer, and controlled all of Central Asia.

  • "Mongol control made overland travel safe."
  • The Mongol Ascendancy was a great time for the Mongol Empire.

MARCO POLO

  • Def: A European visitor from Venice.
  • Foreign Contacts, PG 236
  • Marcos Polo stayed in China for 17 years.
  • Marco Polo wrote a book about about his adventures in China.
