What do you have in your house?

2 Kings 4:1-7 tells the story of the widow with the jar of oil:
"The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “. . . My husband is dead, and . . . now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.” Elisha replied to her, . . . "What do you have in your house?”

NOTHING, EXCEPT A SMALL JAR OF OIL

“Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.” Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars.

DON'T ASK FOR JUST A FEW

Don’t ask for just a few. Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.” She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one. ”But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing.”

then the oil stopped flowing

Elijah asked the widow, "What do you have in your house." What do we have in this house? We have the precious oil of the Holy Ghost. What do we need? We need empty vessels. Elijah said, "Don't ask for just a few." Let's make as much room as we possibly can for these empty people, these empty vessels to come to this altar and be filled with the precious oil of the Holy Ghost. When did the oil stop flowing? When there was not a vessel more.

the creditor came for her sons

We are racing the clock; the creditor was coming to take the widow's sons as slaves, and it is the same today. The creditor intends to take our children and enslave them to sin, but if we will make room for the oil of His anointing to flow through this church, God will do miracles. The widow had to rearrange some things to make room for the empty vessels. I imagine her house was in uproar with jars in every room, but she had only this one thought: I must save my children.

What do we have in our house?

  • faithful, caring teachers
  • faithful kids
  • good facilities
  • supportive church
  • the oil of the Holy Spirit
The widow had very little. We have been given much, and we have the oil of the Holy Ghost here.

making room for:

  • new bus ministry
  • new classes
  • God is blessing us with more children to teach
The widow probably had jars in every room of her house, in every cranny! It was crowded!

We are a little crowded: we need a new Sunday School class for the Toddlers, since several toddlers are promoting this year.

We also are ready to start a class for our middle school students. We will have a "Teen Class," for our middle school students, and a "Youth Class" for our high school students.

So, I need to create two new classrooms out of thin air. Praise God!

We have many challenges

  • We need two more classrooms.
  • Teachers are asking for more time with students.
  • Children are taught different lessons in Sunday School and Children's Church.
  • Kids need to pray at the altar.
These are our challenges, but thank God, he's working everything out!

We're doing something new!

We will have Children's Church first!

The Big Idea

How will it work?
We'll check in and have a song and turn in our bookmarks as usual, and while everyone else has their Sunday School classes, kids ages 4-11 will have Children's Church in the sanctuary.

We use that burst of energy the kids have at the beginning of service to glorify God with action songs.

Children get to experience "church" in their own church, even if they only attend on Sunday morning.

Kids get to pray in this altar; they don't have to wait for a Sunday Evening or a Wednesday Evening service!

ORDER OF SERVICE:

  • Open as usual at 10:00 a.m.
  • Children's Church kids assemble up front. All other classes meet in the back.
  • Children’s Church is held in the sanctuary from 10:10 am. – 10:55 a.m.
  • Then switch!
  • Adults have worship service while kids are in their Sunday School Classes.
Since all adult classes are in the back, every adult has the opportunity to drink coffee in their own class! Let the saints rejoice!

Also, since children from three of our classes are coming into the sanctuary for the first hour of service for Children's Church (the Kindergarten Class, the Primary Class, and the Pre Teens), we now have the extra classroom space that we needed. The twos and threes (the Toddler Class) can have their own room, and the middle schoolers (the Teen Class) can have a room, and we didn't have to build more classrooms!

in depth study

  • Children will learn the same story in many ways for three weeks in Sunday School and Children's Church.
  • Repetition helps kids remember what they learn.
The way our literature has been written in the past, the Toddlers would learn a different lesson than the Primary Class; every class would all have their separate lessons. So then in Children's Church, they're learning a different lesson on the same day. Then parents would say the classic line, "What did you learn in Sunday School" and get nothing but a deer-in-the-headlights look. God has opened a door this year. Our brothers and sisters at Pentecostal Publishing House have produced Apostolic Pentecostal Sunday School literature that has children of every age studying the same story at the same time. Let the saints rejoice!

hearers only

be ye doers of the word, and not
Now, we can have even more fun! Teachers love to get kids involved with all their senses. If kids are studying John the Baptist, they might bring in a honeycomb, and perhaps taste it, or poke it to see what it's like. Kids like to dress up and act out Bible stories, or use puppets. Some kids are creative; they learn when they draw or paint or do crafts. Some kids learn with science; most of the kids loved "walking on water" using the cornstarch and water during our VBS. Hearing the word is great, but we love to get their other senses involved.

More Ways to Learn!

  • In Sunday School, kids will reinforce what they've learned in Children's Church with art, drama, games, science, cooking, etc.
  • Multi-sensory learning reinforces the lesson.
  • Kids experience the Bible, not just hear about it!

STATIONS

  • Children ages 4-11 will rotate to a different Station each week: the Art Station, the Drama Station, and the Mystery Station.
  • Stations help students of any learning style remember the lesson.
  • Stations happen during second hour
With this in mind, for ages 4-11, we will introduce stations this year. Stations will happen during the second hour of church, while the adults have their Worship Service. This will be "Sunday School" time for ages 4-11.

So, for example: if we are studying John the Baptist, one week Asher will attend the Art Station to create a John the Baptist themed craft. The next week, Asher will visit the Drama Station where he might use puppets to learn about John the Baptist. The next week, he will visit the Mystery Station where it could be games, or cooking, or a science demonstration, or a movie about John the Baptist.

Avoiding Teacher Burnout

Stations save time and energy for teachers.
This also helps our teachers, since they do not have to start their entire lesson from scratch every single week. It also zeros in on the strengths of the teachers. We have the most caring, talented, dedicated, loving, Holy Ghost filled teachers that exist here at EBAC. But our teachers have their strengths. They are not all-inclusive god-like omniscient beings with degrees in public speaking, art, music, dramatic performance, child psychology. They come close, but usually, people have one are in which they feel very comfortable. This allows teachers to find their niche, and use their strengths.

Benefits

  • We could not fit very many more children in the present Children's Church room. There is plenty of room in the sanctuary!
  • Kids have their own church service in their own church.

Benefits

  • After the adults go to Worship Service, the larger rooms, such as the current Children's Church room, are available for bigger Sunday School classes.
  • We have more space for more kids in Sunday School without a building project!
Good stuff!

the creditor is knocking

The creditor was coming to take the widow's sons as slaves. The creditor intends to take our children and enslave them to sin, but if we will make room for the oil of His anointing to flow through this church, God will do miracles.

This year, we are going to see kids get the Holy Ghost at this altar during Children's Church, in Jesus' name.

I praise God for every child who has received the Holy Ghost at a conference or a camp, but this year, I am asking God to touch these kids here. Right here.

volunteer

I need to know who is interested in helping with children's ministry. I'm passing around sheets, and if you can help just once a month, twice a month, or once a week, write it down, and you'll be making a difference in these kids lives. If you don't sign up and we don't get enough help, I'll send the kids back to you for Worship Service at 11:15, and they'll have to squirm in the pews for an hour. Also, remember, we do background checks, so if you're a foreign spy who's spent time in Guantanamo Bay, and you're wanted in eight or ten countries, don't sign the paper. Otherwise, write your name down.
