Mayor ciudad precolombina construida por la civilización de Maya.


Big city built by the Mayan civilization. The Mayan name "Chichen Itza" means "at the mouth of the well of the Itza"

¿Cuando? (When)
Chichén Itzá se construyó en el año seiscientos AD. Vivieron allí hasta mil doscientos AD.

Built in 600 AD and was deserted in 1200 AD.

¿Donde? (Where)
El Chichén Itzá es encuentra en la península de Yucatán. Se encuentra acerca 50 millas bajó de costa de Carribean.

Located on the Yucatan Peninsula and 50 miles south of the Carribean.

Outcome?: winning captain would present his head to the losing captain, then the losing captain would decapitate the winning captain.

Fact and Picture 2
The most popular site of Chichén Itzá is El Castillo. El Castillo is a pyramid in the middle of Chichén Itzá the has 365 steps, one for each day of the year.
Twice a year on the spring and autumn equinoxes, a shadow falls on the pyramid in the shape of a serpent. As the sun sets, this snake descends the steps to join a stone serpent head at the base of the great staircase up the pyramid’s side.

Fact and Picture 3
This city’s only permanent water source was a series of sinkhole wells. Young female victims were thrown into the largest of these, live, as sacrifices to the Maya rain god who was thought to live in its depths. Their bones were found, as well as the jewelry and other precious objects they wore in their final hours.

The Platform of the Eagles and the Jaguars (Plataforma de Águilas y Jaguares) is next to the Great Ballcourt. It is built with a staircase ascending each of its four sides. The sides are decorated with panels showing eagles and jaguars consuming human hearts.
