THE CHICANO MOVEMENT

1968 STUDENT WALKOUTS

CONDITIONS

  • Over 50% of Chicano boys and girls were pushed out of school
  • They hadn't been taught to read and write so they failed their classes
  • Classrooms were overcrowded
  • Not many Hispanic teachers
  • Limited access to extracurriculars

ACTIONS

  • Held blowouts, or walkouts
  • Protested curriculum and ban on speaking spanish
  • List of 36 demands including reduced class sizes, more Hispanic teachers, more library access, and no requirement for the kids to work as janitors

OBSTACLES

  • Unjust social and economic conditions
  • Insensitive teachers
  • School officials that were indifferent to helping chicanos
  • Racist beliefs in the community

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Got national attention from the walk outs
  • Some demands were met
  • People got focused on inadequacies in education
  • Added more Hispanic teachers, bilingual education, improved testing, and cultural celebrations
