CHEETAHS: AN ENDANGERED SPECIES

The cheetah's habitat has been reduced by 76%, and they occur widely but sparsely in the regions they still inhabit like the Grasslands and Savannah's. Southern and Eastern Africa are strongholds for cheetah populations.

Benin, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kazungula, Kilimanjaro, Limpopo, Zambezi, East Africa, Southern Africa

Cheetahs are on the top of the food chain/pyramid at secondary or tertiary consumer because they are sometimes preyed on by lions or humans for their pelts. They prey on small antelope and gazelle or any other medium sized animals.

The cheetah's niche in a community is to keep the predator to prey ratio balanced. They are meat eaters that hunt moderately sized, fast running animals.

The word “Cheetah” is derived from the Hindi word “Chita” meaning “spotted one”. The Cheetah is the fastest land animal reaching speeds of 45 – 70 mph. Cheetahs have also been known to swim, although they do not like to. The Cheetah is not one of the Great Cats, because it does not have a floating Hyoid bone in its neck it can not roar, therefore it is a Lesser Cat. Cheetahs have been considered through out history to be a sleek and beautiful cat. Cheetahs have been in captivity for over 5,000 years and were first tamed by the Sumarians. By far the Cheetah has been considered the easiest of the exotic cats to tame. The Cheetahs were used as hunting partners for sport in Asia prior to Assyrian Dynasty in Libia, during the reign of the Pharaohs.

There are many reasons why cheetahs are endangered and the most important are definitely: decline in prey, loss of habitat, poaching, and high mortality of cheetah cubs. Cheetahs once lived in almost all African countries and in large parts of the Asia but today they are almost extinct in Asia, and the number of African countries where once cheetahs lived has increased to 16.

To help the endangered cheetahs I can donate or join multiple different organizations and charities. Most of the charities donate to reservations that are saved for the cheetahs so they can live happily. I could also inform other people about it and get them involved too.
