CHARACTER

A Character is a very important part of the story. Without characters, stories are useless because nothing would happen.

A character is a person in the story. A character goes through conflict, or a problem in the story, and resolution, or the solution. The story wouldn't be interesting without either.

There are major and minor characters. A major character is in the story a lot, and we know a lot, or the most about them. A minor character isn't in the story as often, and without them, the story might still make sense.

An example from "Black Stallion" by Walter Farley

Alec is a major character because we hear about him a lot and he is narrating the story, so we get to know the most about him.

SETTING

A setting is where the story takes place, and what period of time it takes place in. On a farm, in the future, and at school are all settings.

Without a setting, the story would make no sense. You wouldn't know where the characters where, or the period of time they were in. There's practically no story.

Example from "Black Stallion" by Walter Farley

The setting in this story is on a deserted island. There is no one else except Alec and the black stallion. You know because it says "and they are stranded on a deserted island" in the first paragraph.

PLOT

The plot is the entire storyline. What happens in the story and why and how it happens are all the plot. This includes the problem and the solution.

Exposition is a part of the plot. It's at the beginning of the story, and where we meet all the characters and are introduced to the setting.

An example from "Black Stallion"

We are introduced to the setting, the deserted island, the situation, Alec is stranded alone on an island, and the characters, Alec and the stallion.

The rising action is the details and conflict going on inside the story that are building up to the problem.

An example from "Black Stallion"

When Alec is getting to know black, and tries to ride him. This leads up to the most important part of the story.

The climax.
Climax is the problem in the story. The characters must fix this problem in the book.

The falling action is the event or events that are after the climax and lead to fixing the problem.

The resolution is the fixing of the dilemma. In other words, the resolution is where the characters find a way to fix the problem.
