Characterization

How Authors Make Characters Come To Life

Indirect Characterization

  • Remember that indirect characterization shows you how a character
  • is through a variety of ways including: what other say about the
  • character, what the character does or thinks or says, or what the character
  • thinks.

Example of Indirect Characterization

  • "Cap placed the shrouded little corpse into
  • the hole and covered it tenderly with earth."
  • This shows that Cap is a kind person without
  • directly saying it.

Direct Characterization

  • The author directly states traits
  • of a character.

Example of Direct Characterization

  • "I was homeschooled."
  • Here the author clearly gives us this
  • trait concerning Cap by having him to
  • say it.
