CHAPTER 3 MATTER

LUKE ELTISTE PER. 6

Matter
Anything that has mass or volume is made of matter.

Measurements
There are many ways of measuring things, there is mass, volume, length
Mass is measured in grams, volume in mL, and length in meters

Mass
A measure of the amount of matter in an object.

Volume
A measure of the size of a body in three-dimensional space

Length
The distance from end to end of an object.

Physical Properties
Physical properties are the properties an object has that can be used to identify a material.

SOME PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

  • Thermal conductivity, the rate at which a substance transfers heat
  • Ductility, the ability to be made into wire
  • State, if its a solid, liquid, or gas
  • Malleability, the ability to be rolled or pounded into different shapes
  • Solubility, the ability of a substance to disolve into amother object

Density
The ration of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance.
Water has a density of 1 and anything with a less amount of density will float

Physical Change
When water is frozen is turns to a solid but stays the same substance, so it went through a physical change.
