CHAPTER 2- LIFE BEFORE THE WAR

A Farming People
The Hmong made their homes out of sticks and bamboo. Their homes had no running water

Clearing Land
Hmong farmers cleared the fields by cutting down trees and burning them. Both men and boys cleared the fields

Planting Rice
Women and children weeded the rice, they pounded and weeded the field. Each field was weeded twice more during the summer.

Farming on a mountainside:
They wove their own baskets. They also planted fields on there mountainside.

Everyone Must Work
Both men and women worked in the field. Nearly most of the work was done by hand. Some farmers had water buffaloes.

Little time for school
Before the war, few Hmong children attended school. Students lived at school during the week. Children had a lot of work to do instead of going to school.

The Fruits Of War
Hmong people lived a simple life, they were a farming people. They raised many animals. Vietnam war changed this way of life. You either join the US side of the communists side. Many Hmong fled to the jungle
