PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Waves

WHAT IS A WAVE

  • A periodic disturbance in a solid, liquid, or gas as energy is transmitted through a medium

WHAT ARE TWO TPUES OF WAVES

  • Transverse waves
  • Longitudinal waves

EXAMPLES OF TRANSERSE WAVES

  • Light waves

EXAMPLES OF LONGITUDINAL WAVES

  • Sound waves

WHAT IS REFLECTION, RAREFACTION, AND DRIFFRACTION

  • Reflection-The bouncing back of a ray of light, sound, or heat when the Ray hits a surface that it does not go through
  • Rarefaction-The bending of a wavefront as the wavefront passes between two substance in which the speed of the wave differs
  • Diffraction-A change in the direction of a wave the wave finds an edge, such as an opening

HOW DO YOU CALCULATE VELOCITY OF A WAVE

  • Velocity=frequency*wavelength

DESCRIBE CONSTRUCTIVE AND DESTRUCTIVE INTERFERENCE

  • Constructive-Any interference in which waves combine so that the resulting wave is bigger than the original waves
  • Destructive-Any interference in which waves combine so that the resulting wave is smaller than the largest of the original waves

THE DOPPER EFFECT

  • An observed change in the frequency of a wave when the source or observer is moving
