CHAPTER 11 VOCABULARY

Infantry:
Define: Foot Soldiers
Sentence: the infantry, as usual, took the worst of the battle"

Cavalry:
Define: Group of soldiers on horseback.
Sentence: He rode with the cavalry during the Mexican War.

Provisional:
Define: Temporary
Sentence: He had a Provisional Driving License.

Casualties:
Define: People who are killed, wounded, captured, or missing during a war.
Sentence: One of the Soldiers had gotten hurt so his partners helped him go to help.

Noncombatant:
Define: People who are not involved in the fighting of a war
Sentence: The man that is circled in the picture was not apart of the war, but the other two men were.

Popular Sovereignty :
Define: Principle of government that all political power comes from the people.
Sentence: the Republic of Texas was based on the idea of Popular Sovereignty.

Bill of rights:
Define: Government documents that outlines the civil liberties, or individual rights, that a government promises to protect.
Sentence: The Constitution of the Republic Of Texas included a bill of rights.

Petition:
Define: Formal requests made by citizens to the government.
Sentence:The boy signs a petition for school to find out who wants recess and who doesn't.

Ad interim:
Define: Temporary
Sentence: because Texas was at war, the delegates at the constitution of 1836 created an ad interim, or temporary government. ( David G. Burnet was chosen as the interim president.)

Davy Crockett:
Define: Crockett was a famous frontiersman and a former U.S. Congressman.
Sentence: Davy Crockett led a dozen Tennessee Volunteers into San Antonio.

James Bowie:
Define: James Bowie Was sent to San Antonio to evaluate the situation Sentence: When James Bowie arrived to San Antonio he arrived with 25 men.

William B. Travis:
Define: William acquired land from Stephen F. Austin and set up a law practice at Anahuac.
Sentence: Travis became part of a rebel group that opposed the Law of April 6, 1830.

Grass Fight:
Define: The Grass Fight was a battle during the Texas Revolution, fought between the Mexican Army and the Texan Army.
Sentence: Texans eagerly opened the bags that supposedly held silver, only to find grass.

Battle at the Alamo:
Define/Sentence: The Battle at the Alamo became a rallying point for Texas troops throughout the Texas Revolution.

Santa Anna:
Define: In 1833 Santa Anna was elected president of Mexico.
Sentence: Santa Anna promised to restore the constitution of 1824, but he did not fulfill his promise, and war soon erupted.
