  • Began with a total ban of alcohol
  • Started the uprise of bootleggers (liquor smugglers) Speakeasies (illegal taverns) and gang wars
  • Al Capone (Alphonse Gabriel Capone) born in Brooklyn, New York- America's best known gangster
  • Moe Smith & Izzy Einstein- undercover police team, most famous prohibition cops of their time, dressed up in elaborate costumes to capture criminals

WOMEN'S CAUSES

  • 1920s- first time women could vote in presidential elections & joined political parties
  • Rise in female employment- creative jobs: fashion, dancing, singing, acting, writing
  • Flapper: a fashionable young woman uninterested in women's rights who rebelled against traditional standards of behavior

  • Instant success
  • Affordable for almost every family
  • Leading supplier of entertainment
  • Families would listen together as dinner

  • Frank Conrad- engineer best known for radio development
  • KDKA- first commercial radio station
  • By 1926- 700+ radio stations

  • Henry Luce launched TIME magazine in 1923
  • He developed new approaches to news coverage
  • Luce built a media empire: included Fortune, LIFE & Sports Illustrated
  • Pewitt Walace published Reader's Digest in 1922- started with a self-published pamphlet "Getting the Most Out of Farming"

ADVERTISING

  • more people were using automobiles, radios, household appliances, & leisure activities---> business wanted to advertise to the people
  • New media for advertising to reach consumers- advertising was bigger and better
  • Since the 1920s- American advertising has grown massively

SCOPES TRIAL

  • John Scope, a high school teacher, broke TN law by teaching his students about the theory of evolution WANTED TO CHALLENGE THE LAW
  • Evolution: the scientific theory devised by Charles Darwin
  • 1st highly publicized trial concerning the teaching of evolution
  • Known as the TRIAL OF THE CENTURY

•Represents clash between traditional & modern values in America
•religious leaders rejected evolution- saying it denied the word of the Bible

REBIRTH OF THE KKK

  • known as the "Invisible Empire"
  • In 1915 the KKK was reborn 50 years after the fall of the original
  • In many states they had enough support to control the government
  • Fought for white supremacy
  • The leader was Colonel William Joseph Simmons

CARS

  • Became a symbol for individual freedom & independence
  • Created new jobs: road side restaurants, gas station,...etc.
  • Impacted crime- easier for gangsters to smuggle weapons & alcohol
  • Henry Ford- assembly line for mass production of cars (faster&cheaper manufacturing)

(Groucho, Harpo, Leonard, Zeppo, and Gummo) were a family of comedians mostly seen on Broadway and in motion pictures. They were also well known for their songs.
