Hockey Mask

  • The very first goalie to wear a mask was Jacques Plante.
  • Plante suffered a cut to the face while playing with no mask.
  • Upon getting stitches while the game was still being played, he came back and said he would return to the game if he could use a his mask.
  • November 1, 1959 was the first time someone played with a mask as well as the last time someone played without one.

Netting

  • In March 19, 2002, a fan was struck by a puck and killed behind the glass because there was nothing protecting a shot from going over the glass.
  • The commissioner at the time made it mandatory that safety nets be installed to protect the fans from pucks coming blazing towards them and not being protected.

Goalies playing the puck

  • Most of the time goalies usually stay in their designated crease.
  • Jacques Plante was the first goalie to stop a puck while not being inside the crease.
  • In doing so, Plante created a whole new way for goalies to play, which in return would require the league to set new boundaries for what they can do.

Televised Games

  • As technology was advancing in the mid 1900's, TV's were on the rise.
  • if you wanted to see a hockey game, you would have to go to the rink and watch it live.
  • In 1952, the first NHL game was broadcast to those who owned TV's.
  • This made watching hockey much easier for those who didn't want to have to go watch they game in person, but could watch it in the comfort of their own home.

Ovechkin and Crosby

  • Ovechkin and Crosby have been huge names ever since they entered the league in '04 and '05.
  • These two phenomenal players have achieved stats that no one would ever believe could be possible.
  • The rivalry between these two players always ensures that the game will be a sight to see.
