PRESENTATION OUTLINE

GRENADA, 1983

  • Is a small Caribbean island
  • Grenada started making ties with communist Cuba
  • President Reagan sent about 2,000 Troops to the island
  • There they overthrew the pro-Cuban government
  • It was replaced with one that was friendlier to the us

PANAMA, 1989

  • President Bush sent about 20,0000 soldiers into Panama to overthrow & arrest General Manuel Antonio Noriega
  • He was charged with drug trafficking
  • He had been receiving pay from the CIA sense the 1960's
  • Noriega was taken by force by the American military and flown to Miami to stand trial
  • In April 1992, Noriega was convicted and sentenced to 40 years in prison

THE IRAN-CONTRA SCANDAL

  • Terrorist groups loyal to Iran took a number of Americans hostage in Lebanon
  • Reagan denounced Iran and urged U.S. allies not to sell arms to Iran for its war against Iraq
  • In 1986 Reagan had approved the sale of arms to Iran. In exchange for those sales, Iran promised to win the release of seven American hostages held in Lebanon by pro-Iranian terrorists

THE PERSIAN GULF WAR

  • Iraq claimed than Kuwait was theirs
  • On August 2, 1990, Iraqi troops invaded Kuwait. The Iraqi invaders looted Kuwait
  • Bush then launched Operation Desert Storm
  • On January 16, 1991, the United States and its allies staged a massive air assault against Iraq
  • On February 23, they launched a successful ground offensive from Saudi Arabia

THE PERSIAN GULF WAR(CONTIUED)

  • On February 28, 1991, President Bush announced a cease-fire. Operation Desert Storm was over
  • Kuwait was liberated
  • The un forces only took 400 casualties but the Iraqi forces took 100,000 military and civilian casualties
