Censorship of Media

By: Khush Hussain

Censorship

  • Censorship is altering news, music, plays movies, etc. to become less offensive more more appealing to the audience
  • The first amendment states the freedom of speech and the freedom of the press
  • Censorship prohibits this freedom
  • The problem is that media isn't delivering the news that is important or if they do, the media seems to focus on the case or event from one persepctive
  • They censor the material which they feel vierwers wont care about however this violates American morals of freedom of speech and freedom of the press

Types of Censorship

  • Protecting personal privacy
  • Avoiding Graphic Details
  • Masking secret information
  • Serving the publics interest
  • Hiding a Bias

Personal Privacy

  • When a crime is committed, the victim or the accused want to conceal thier identity
  • This way, he is protected from getting into college or getting turned down from getting a job
  • For example, the media while not release the names of rape victims to the public to ensure they don't face public huimliation

Avoiding Graphic Details

  • Crimes and violence acts can have graphic details
  • The news has to decipher which graphic details they can share and which one to censor
  • They have to do it in a way where the people will understand the events without revealing all the graphics
  • In certain cases, extreme violence or sexual violence will be exempted from the news room

Mask Security Information

  • When the government in involved in secret issues and a publication finds out, most likely the newspaper will publish a story
  • The U.S. government keeps a certain amount of their work in secrecy
  • A publisher will have a difficult time publishing a story about the government information which is to be concealed, the government will attempt to censor it

Serving the Publics interest

  • In many cases, the news will share out stories that intrigue the public
  • Even if the story isn't entirely important at the time, the news will still deliver it to compensate with the publics interests

Hiding a Bias

  • In America, the news will censor an issue or even focus only on one aspect of the case or event
  • The media will attempt to hide a bias however with the technology now a days (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) people are more prone to finding out the full story rather then what the news is delivering

Examples of Censorship

  • Recently there has been a series of news stories that have either been censored or barely covered at all
  • This is a theme which has been going on very frequently in the news

Chapel Hill

  • Three young american muslim teenagers were killed by Craig Hicks
  • Craig Hicks would post anti-muslim sentiments on Facebook
  • The media delayed to cover the crime
  • While the media tried to censor the atrocities of the crime by stating the killing was over a parking dispute
  • Many believe however that the killing was due to a hate crime
  • Example of serving the publics interest

ISIS

  • ISIS is a terrorist organization which targets individuals and captures cities
  • The organization is extremely violent and brutal therefore the media has the censor the graphics
  • ISIS members take videos of them killing individuals and soon after they post them which poses a threat to other nations
  • America censors the atrocities
  • Example of avoiding graphic details

Israeli/Palestinian Conflict

  • The on going dispute in Israel and Palestine over land has been covered by the media various times
  • However, most of the media covers the situation in Israel rather than covering the occuring issues on both Palestine and Israel
  • The United States and Israel are allies therefore the media is covering one side of the issue
  • U.S. gives more funds to Israel than any other nation
  • Example of hiding a bias

Ferguson Case

  • Michael Brown was an unarmed teenager was shot by a white police officer named Darren Wilson
  • After a long process the jury decided not to indict the police officer
  • Many people were angry that the case was mainly censored ton only one aspect of the case
