PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CELL THEORY

ONE OF THE FIRST UNIFYING CONCEPTS DEVELOPED IN BIOLOGY

MAJOR PRINCIPLES OF THE CELL THEORY

  • All organisms are made of cells
  • All existing cells are produced by other living cells
  • The cell is the most basic unit of life

CONTRIBUTORS TO CELL THEORY

  • Hooke: the first to identify cells and he named them
  • Leeuwenhoek: made better lenses for the microscope, and observed cells in greater detail
  • Schleiden: the first to note that plants are made of cells
  • Schwann: concluded that all living things are made of cells
  • Virchow: proposed that all cells come from other cells

PROKARYOTIC CELLS

  • Do not have a nucleus
  • Do not have membrane-bound organelles
  • The cells DNA is suspended in the cytoplasm
  • All prokaryotic cells are microscopic single-celled organisms

EUKARYOTIC CELLS

  • Has a nucleus
  • Has membrane-bound organelles
  • The nucleus encloses the genetic information
  • Eukaryotes can be multi-cellular or single celled organisms
