CELL THEORY

EARLY STUDIES LED TO THIS THEORY

CONTRIBUTERS TO THE THEORY

  • Robert Hooke
  • Anton Van Leeuwenhoek
  • Matthias Schleiden
  • Theodore Schwann
  • Rudolf Virchow

WHAT THEY DID

  • Hooke discovered small holes in cork, and called them cells
  • Leeuwenhoek was the first to describe cells, called animalcules
  • Schleiden proposed that all plants are made of cells
  • Schwann said that both animals and plants were made of cells and cell products
  • Virchow proved that cells come from pre-existing cells

PRINCPLES OF THE THEORY

  • All organisms are made of cells
  • All cells are produced by other cells
  • The cell is the most basic unit of life

PROKARYOTIC CELLS

  • No nucleus or cell membrane
  • DNA suspended in cytoplasm
  • Prokaryotes are single celled organisms

EUKARYOTIC CELLS

  • Have a nucleus and membrane bound organelles
  • Nucleus encloses genetic information
  • May be multi or singular celled
