CELL ORGANELLES

Organelles are membrane-bound structures present inside a eukaryotic cell.

CELL WALL

• Present in plant cells
• Outer most part that provides protection and support.
• Semi-permeable

CELL MEMBRANE

• Second layer in plants below the cell wall
• Outermost layer in animal cells
• Regulates what passes though the cell

NUCLEUS

• Control center of cell: controls activities
• Contains DNA in chromosomes
• Most important organelle

ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM

• Two parts: rough and smooth ER
• Rough ER is the site of cell synthesis
• Rough ER is respons. for transport of proteins
• Smooth ER plays a role in carbohydrate metabolism

RIBOSOMES

• Thousands of spherical structures
• Made of proteins
• Present in prokaryotic cells also
• Structure that read info on mRNA
• Site of translation of RNA to proteins

GOLGI APPARATUS

• responsible for modifying the chains synthesized in the ER to get the protein
• Site to breakdown proteins
• Pack and distribute macromolecules throughout cell

LYSOSOME

• Serve as the waste disposal system
• Digest unwanted pathogens
• Are spherical shaped

MITOCHONDRIA

• Is the powerhouse of the cell
• Site of cellular respiration

VACUOLES

• Store water and food in cells
• Plants have a large central vacuole
• Animals have multiple, smaller vacuoles
• Reduces in size according into needs of cells

CHLOROPLAST

• Are present only in plant cell
• Site of photosynthesis
• Contain chlorophyll, pigment that makes green coloring
