MILITARISM:
Militarism is when military values and goals take over civilian society. In the end of the 19th century Kings began to wear military uniforms and Generals became influential in government. Germany and Britain had the most powerful navies. Military leaders thought it was better to attack first than wait to be attacked.

ALLIANCES:
Alliances are unions or associations that are formed for mutual benefit. In 1914, Europe had divided into two alliances. One was the Triple Alliance that had Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. The other was Triple Entente that had France and Great Britain.

NATIONALISM:
Nationalism is the belief that each ethnic group should have its own nation and promote their own interests. Nationalism encouraged rivalries between France, Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia. It also lead to the creation of new independent nations, they were mainly unstable. There were different ethnic groups that unified.

IMPERIALISM:
Imperialism is the political and economic control of one state or people over another. Europeans believed that they demonstrated their power with colonization overseas. That created competition for colonies in Africa and Asia. German industrialization threatened British economic supremacy. By 1900, 1/4 of the world was under British rule.

Assassination:
To assassinate means to harm treacherously. This primarily triggered World War I. The minor regional crisis in the Balkans escalated into a major European conflict. The Ottoman Empire quickly joined the Central powers to oppose Russia, while Bulgaria joined to oppose Serbia.
