MISSOURI COMPROMISE 1820

The Missouri compromise issued an imaginary line creating a border between free states and slave states. During this act Maine became a free state.this benefits the north because the now get Maine
MEXICAN AMERICAN WAR 1845

The first War in U.S history to be fought on foreign soil, America fought Mexico for territory. America won the war and gained a huge portion of Mexico's territory. This could benefit the south because they could have many new slave states
After the battle between Mexico and America over slavery in Texas, Texas asked to become part of the United States. After Texas was annexed by the U.S Mexico and America went to war. This did not benefit the north on the anti-slavery movement, as Texas became a large slave state.
The wilmot proviso was the decision to keep slavery out of the territories earned from the Mexican war. David wilmot proposed his amendment which caused an uproar in the senate. This could benefit the north or south once the decision of wether the new territories will become slave or free states
FUGITIVE SLAVE LAW 1850

The law that any slave in the U.S. Territory could be captured and returned to their owners. And the people that helped those slaves would be imprisoned. This helped the south because they now didn't have to spend money on buying new slaves when the could just capture the escaped slaves.
COMPROMISE OF 1850

After Henry clays compromise was passed the north and south started to gain from this. North got California and prohibited slave trade in D.C and that Texas loses boundary dispute with New Mexico. South gained no slavery restrictions in Utah and New Mexico, for slaveholding in D.C permitted, Texas gained $10 million, and fugitive slave
law. Both north and south gained from this.
FREE SOIL PARTY 1848

Barnburners, anti-slavery whigs, and former members of the liberty party formed the free soil forces, with Martain Van Buren as president. The movement was to have no slaves in the terrioitories aquirred from mexico. This offered people free homes and land if they settled there but no slaves were allowed in western territory. This gave western support of anti-slavery which worried the south

Dred Scott Decision 1857

The case of a slave, dred Scott, to Supreme Court about slavery in the west. Dreds case was ended when his owner stated "property" could not take part in court. This angered many people. This anger went on for four years before turning into the civil war.
REPUBLICAN PARTY IS FOUNDED 1854

The Whigs created the Republican Party. John C. Fermont was the first republican candidate. He was going to become president until the south threatened to secede from the nation if he won the election.
South Carolina seceded from the union because they thought the federal government was violating the constitution. South Carolina then became a slave state. This benefited the south because now the had another supporting state for pro-slavery.
