PENN STATE'S MASCOT

Not to be confused with an African lion, the Penn State mascot is a mountain lion. It is called the Nittany lion in reference to Mount Nittany, which, legend says, rose up from the burial site of princess Nita-Nee, who led her Native American tribe to central Pennsylvania.

ALSO NOT AN AFRICAN LION

This Maine Coon cat is known for its long hair and mane-like fur around its face.

MAINE COON CAT

Maine Coons are not named after the manes around their face. They are named for the state in which they are believed to have originated, Maine, and the raccoon like rings around their tails.
