General Information

  • Original Population: 5,000
  • Current Population: 1,300
  • Catawba tribe joined together with the Commanches

Location

  • South Carolina and North Carolina
  • Eastern Oklahoma plains

Daily Life

  • Men were hunters and went to war
  • Woman were farmers and cooked all of the food
  • Children helped around with chores
  • Grandparents did most of the tutoring and story telling

Food

  • Deer, Wild turkeys, small game and fish
  • Corn, beans, and squash
  • Blueberries, tomatoes, and strawberries

Housing

  • Small round circular shaped homes
  • Made of wooden frames and bark walls
  • Large building for meetings

Housing requirments

  • 8-10 feet tall
  • Up to 6 people could live together
  • Survives all seasons
  • Changed to square houses after colonization

  • Stories were very important
  • Funerals were 3 days after death
  • A marriage god
  • Ceremonies for new babies
