CAS Journal Term 2

Published on Nov 19, 2015

A presentation demonstrating the programs I was involved in for CAS in Term 2.

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CAS Journal Term 2

Shams Elnawawi, 25th of April 2014

Creativity

  • Band Practice
  • Orchestra
  • Engagement Concert
  • Piano and Vocal Lessons

Band practice

  • Practice for the engagement concert
  • New style of songs - more pop and modern music
  • Involved the learning of several new songs, with practice of older ones
  • Practice for Family Day
  • Some different songs, along with older classics
Generally, we were able to adopt a new style of music and play it quite well. It was difficult trying to get everyone in the band to show up during practices, and we felt by concert time (for both concerts) that we were unprepared. Despite this, we were able to improvise our way through it and we got some compliments for playing well.

Band practice continued

  • Much more improvisation and soloing for me
  • Hopefully we'll organise a fundraiser concert in May
  • This is to take some leadership in a charity event
  • Also for self-improvement and motivation for practice and playing
This fundraiser concert is just an idea, but Tristan, Marwan and I feel that we need another concert before Year 12 ends. And obviously, we want to help out a charity we work with, but we still need to discuss details as to which charity we'll help, and the logistics of this concert.

orchestra

  • Practices for the Junk to Funk Fashion show
  • Two main songs - Avatar soundtrack, Crazy for Cartoons
  • More group work than sectionals this term
  • High amount of improvement for the orchestra as a whole

engagement concert

  • The engagement party for a cousin of mine
  • She asked us to play in the party, so we agreed
  • We played well, for a genre that we don't regularly play
  • Our first paid concert
  • Gave us some kind of publicity
My cousin and her fiancee asked us to play for her engagement party on the 21st of March, but asked us to play more pop music and things people could dance to, which isn't our regular type of music. Despite this, we went with it and were able to play quite well.

piano and vocal lessons

  • Continuation of lessons with Raouf Zaidan
  • Work on classical pieces and general technique
  • I started working on some vocals, hopefully will continue to do so
Not much change from last time, except that I started doing some vocal work with Raouf. I am very interested in doing vocals, but I am only just starting. Hopefully, I'll continue to work with Raouf both on piano and vocals.

action

  • Gardening
  • Football League
  • CISSA Varsity Football Tournament
  • Driving Lessons

gardening

  • Much more work (for me) on compost and jobs besides weeding
  • I'll continue to work on other things like planting seeds and fertilising
There's not much that is different from last term with regards to gardening, except for the fact that I began working more with Fady on the composting part of the garden, and with the fertilisers and spreading compost and fertiliser on the garden. I've also worked more on planting seeds, and getting the patches ready to be planted.

Football league

  • A lot of improvement for my team in the League
  • We placed 3rd in the League at the end
  • We had a lot more playing together by the end
  • There was some inconsistency in showing up to the League
  • We managed to beat two teams on the last day

cissa varsity football tournament

  • 1st of February 2014
  • Hosted at Choueifat
  • I didn't play much, less than one half per game
  • Playing against Alsson, Choueifat 6th of October and others

service

  • Holy Family Catholic Church
  • Literacy Training
  • Cancer Hospital
There is not much detail to be added to the things I was part of in Service, which is why they don't have side notes.

Holy family catholic church

  • More work with Jane Cowper, the manager of the thrift store
  • I had not showed up for 5 weeks after the Japan trip
  • Hopefully will show up and will try to bring donations to the shop
I hadn't been at the thrift shop for quite a while, so I can't really say much about it. I went twice before the Japan trip, but after that there was a series of obstacles, such as family obligations and deaths that I could not miss.

literacy training

  • Began with 2 new girls from Moqattam
  • Working with Eveline on teaching pronunciation and reading
  • Also helping them with their exams in English outside of learning with us
  • It's been much more productive since last term
  • We've had more people join and less girls come, so it's easier for us

cancer hospital

  • Visited with a group of Year 12's on the 22nd of February
  • Played with the children, sang with them and had small conversations
  • We visited the different wards and played with different groups of children

driving lessons

  • Began on the 19th of April 2014
  • Worked with Ra Driving School in Maadi
  • Drove a manual transmission car in Zahraa el Maadi
  • I learned the basics of driving - i.e. clutch pedal, using gas and brakes
  • I have 2 more lessons of learning about signals and other parts of driving
