Carbon comes into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide from respiration and combustion.
Carbon dioxide is absorbed by producers (plants) to make carbohydrates in photosynthesis.
Animals eat the plant, passing the carbon compounds along the food chain. Most of the carbon consumed is exhaled as carbon dioxide that was formed during respiration. The plants and animals eventually die.
4. The dead organisms are consumed by decomposers, and the carbon in their bodies is back in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. The animal and plant material can be used as fossil fuel later in the future for combustion.
