PRESENTATION OUTLINE
1.
CARBOHYDRATE
A carbohydrate is a macromolecule,
consisting of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
2.
MONOSACCHARIDES
Carbohydrate monomers are called monosaccharides
Example: glucose and fructose.
3.
DISACCHARIDES
Two monomers are joined by a glycosidic bond to form a disaccharide.
Example: sucrose.
4.
POLYMERS
Carbohydrate polymers. Example: starch, glycogen and cellulose.
Formed from many monomers joined by glycosidic bonds.
5.
CHEMICAL ENERGY
Carbohydrates are important sources and stores of chemical energy.
There are tests to indicate if they are in food.
6.
CARBOHYDRATES ARE IN FOODS WE EAT
whole grain breads and cereals, pasta, and rice.
Starchy vegetables.
Examples: potatoes, green peas, lima beans, beets.
7.
FIBER
Fiber is a carbohydrate that cannot be broken down.
It passes through the body undigested.
8.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
CARBOHYDRATES ARE SYNTHESIZED DURING PHOTOSYNTHESIS.
