PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CARBOHYDRATE

  • A carbohydrate is a macromolecule,
  • consisting of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.

MONOSACCHARIDES

  • Carbohydrate monomers are called monosaccharides
  • Example: glucose and fructose.

DISACCHARIDES

  • Two monomers are joined by a glycosidic bond to form a disaccharide.
  • Example: sucrose.

POLYMERS

  • Carbohydrate polymers. Example: starch, glycogen and cellulose.
  • Formed from many monomers joined by glycosidic bonds.

CHEMICAL ENERGY

  • Carbohydrates are important sources and stores of chemical energy.
  • There are tests to indicate if they are in food.

CARBOHYDRATES ARE IN FOODS WE EAT

  • whole grain breads and cereals, pasta, and rice.
  • Starchy vegetables.
  • Examples: potatoes, green peas, lima beans, beets.

FIBER

  • Fiber is a carbohydrate that cannot be broken down.
  • It passes through the body undigested.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS

CARBOHYDRATES ARE SYNTHESIZED DURING PHOTOSYNTHESIS.
