The first Cape Hatteras was built in 1903. The Cape Hatteras still standing today was built between 1869-1870.

Cape Hatteras was built in Dare County. It was built there because of offshore currents which causes fog, dangerous storms, and shallow water while the sailors think it is still deep enough causing shipwrecks.

The first Cape Hatteras was only 90 ft. tall but now it is 225 ft. tall and can see 20 miles.

Cape Hatteras is made out of bricks and is the tallest brick lighthouse in America.

FUN FACTS

  • There are 268 steps to climb to the top platform.
  • They had to replace the first Cape Hatteras because of erosion.
  • The original Cape Hatteras was a 90 ft. sandstone tower. The lighthouse was not big enough to be seen.
