Cape Brett lighthouse was first established in 1906 for the entrance of bay of islands.
Cape Brett lighthouse was built to guard the entrance of bay of island since it had no guarding system for the bay of islands.
Cape Brett in 1908 included three identical houses for the lighthouse keepers and their families. Their duties included sending daily weather reports to the Meteorological Office.
Cape Brett lighthouse got re-coloured, since it had rusted and also in 1978, a smaller automatic light was installed.
It was the first light of three in New Zealand to utilize Mercury bath technology.
It make two flashes every 30 seconds with a visibility of up to 48kms (30miles) away.
