ARTILLERY- CANNONBALL

USED IN CANNONS TO HARM SHIPS. J.M.H.N.S.T.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • Cannon balls are made of cast iron
  • Are inserted through the mouth of the cannon
  • Solid shots are used to make holes in the walls and decks of ships
  • Can cause either minor injuries and major damage to ships making holes which could help sink the ship.

WHAT'S IT GOT TO DO WITH THE ARMADA?

  • It caused major damage to the wood in ships on deck
  • The Spanish had many more resources but they used smaller balls as it cost less
  • Both sides therefore faced problems of lack of ammunition
  • The English didn't have enough artillery so they started melting lead and iron from church roofs to make cannonballs
