CANAVAN DISEASE

CHROMESOME

  • Canavan disease affects the 17 chromosome it doesn't affect the 23
  • It adds another 17th chromosome
  • The leukodystrophy (When nerve cells break down)

SIGNS AND SYPTOMS

  • Signs normally appear 3-9 months of life
  • Some symptoms are bigger head circumference, lack of head control, reduced vision response, children with the disease cannot walk crawl or sit.
  • You can not see symptoms at birth only from 3-5 months.

DISORDER

  • The genetic disorder normally occurs in jewish heritage

LIFE EXPECTANCY

  • Most infants only survive to the age of 10.

LIFE EXPECTANCY

  • If you have a mild case of this disease you live to the age of 9-10
  • If you have an aggressive case you are lucky to live pass the age of 4.

CHALLENGES

  • They cannot walk, crawl or sit.
  • Their parents have trouble feeding them.
  • They have trouble talking.

TREATMENTS

  • They can diagnose the disease by using multiple test.
  • The test that they use are Cat scan, mri.
  • These test are use to see the decline of white matter in the brain.
  • They can also use blood test.

TREATMENTS

  • There is no cure for canavan disease.
  • There are no Therapies and No medications for the disease.

POSSIBLE TREATMENTS

  • There are future treatments.
  • So far they are doing gene replacement on mice.
