CALLISTO

Make sure you read carefully because there is a quiz after this.

Callisto was discovered in 1610 by Galileo Galilei. Ganymede is the ONLY moon that is bigger than Callisto that orbits Jupiter

The moons that are larger than Callisto are Titan (one of Saturn's moons) and Ganymede (one of Jupiter's moons).

Callisto was part of the Galilean moons along with Ganymede, lo, and Europa. Astronomers think that Callisto could be one of the oldest moons in the solar system.

Callisto has the most amount of craters of ALL the moons in the solar system. It's craters are thought to be ancient. Callisto is as rocky and icy as Ganymede.

Callisto has a very dark surface, which shows it's great age. It looks brighter than our own moon because of the thick layer of ice facing us.

Callisto is the farthest moon from Jupiter of all four which I labeled earlier. It is over 1 million miles away from Jupiter! It's orbit is 7,345,927 miles long. It has a speed of 18,400 miles an hour.

Callisto (as all other Jupiter moons) was named after a god/goddess. Her name was Callisto. She was beautiful, so Zeus/Jupiter turned her into a bear. He didn't want his wife to be too jealous.

He made Callisto a constellation called the Great Bear. Zeus' and Callisto's son was a constellation as well. His constellation name was Little Bear. (Quiz next).

•Who discovered Callisto?

•Which year did it happen?

•Which 2 moons are bigger than Callisto?
