Finding Erosion in Dimple Dell Park

5th grade students will observe erosion in a nearby park.

They will walk along Dry Creek within Dimple Dell Park, use GPS units, and document erosion.

Sandy City and Salt Lake County Parks will be our community partners for this project.

  • How does water erode the earth?
  • How does erosion change the landscape?
  • How can we map a stream and the areas of erosion?
  • How can we prevent erosion?

Timeline

Week 1
Building knowledge of the types of erosion and the process of erosion

Week 2
Simulate erosion with a stream table. Students make observations of how streams change

Week 3
Students get trained on GPS units and then travel to Dimple Dell Park to complete their erosion investigation.

Week 4
Student compile data and pictures into a Story Map to present their findings/ideas.

Resources Needed

  • YouTube videos
  • Articles about erosion
  • Map of Dimple Dell Park
  • GPS units
  • Camera/iPads (for pictures)
  • Computers for presentations

Students will need to:

  • Read/use a GPS
  • Describe erosion in pictures
  • Make predictions, draw conclusions
  • Solve problems
  • Work collaboratively with peers

To celebrate, we will present our maps to each other, invite parents, and have snacks to celebrate.

We will also submit the class favorite to Sandy City with our ideas of how to handle the erosion.

Future plans include comparing data from year to year to further analyze how erosion is affecting the park.
