JUSTINIAN MARRIES THEODORA
Theodora was married to Justinian in 525.
During one political crisis she confiscated the property of the general Belisarious.
Theodora is an important figure in history because most of the laws and decisions made by Justinain
were made by Theodora first.

JUSTINIAN CODE
The Code contained 4 sections in which they discussed the laws that appealed to the social classes.
Justinian's Code was created in 529.
The Code was 400 hundred years of Roman Laws in one, four volume code.
The Justinian Code regulated whole areas of Byzantine life.

NIKA REBELLION
In 532, a large group of people gathered in the Hippodrome to start a riot.
During the riot the crowd chanted "Nika" which means "victory".
Theodora commanded Justinian to do something about the riot crowd gathering.
The Nika Rebellion was important because it showed how afraid and weak Justinian could be in comparison to Theodora.
After breaking into the Hippodrome, Belisarious and his troops marched in and slaughtered 30,000 rebels.

HAGIA SOPHIA
Hagia Sophia means "Holy Wisdom" in Greek
A church of the same name had been destroyed in the year of 531.
The Hagia Sophia is the largest Christian chruch in the world.
The Hagia Sophia is important because it represents the Christian Religion.
Some say that the Hagia Sophia is the center of all Christianity.

THEODORA'S DEATH
Theodora, Justinians wife died in the year of 548.
The death of Justinian's wife was to much to bare for him, he was so depressed that he passed
no more major laws for the rest of his reign.
This was an unfortunate event due to the fact that Justinian made most of his decisions off of her say.

FOUNDING OF NOVGOROD
In 862, the Slavs invited Viking cheif Rurik to be king.
Rurik founded one of Russia's most important cities, Novgorod.
This was a important event in Russian history becuase it is now one of Russia's most famous cities.

VIKING'S TRADE WITH CONSTANTINOPLE
In the year 880, a nobleman from Novgorod named Oleg moved to South Kiev,
a city on the Dnieper River, North of Constantinople.
From Kiev Vikings could sail downriver to trade with Comstantinople.
Both cities were dependent on one another for resources.

PRINCESS OLGA CONVERTS TO CHRISTIANITY
In the of 957, a memeber of the Kievan nobility, Princess Olga travleed to Constantinople.
When she arrived to Constantinople she publicly converted to Christianity for reason beacuse it was
a more peaceful religon.
This was an important event because it changed the outlook on the other people Kievan community.

MONGOL INVASIONS
In the mid-1200's a ferocious group of horseman from central Asia skashed their way into Russia.
These men were under the order of Genghis Khan on of the most feared warriors of all time.
The invasions killed thousands of innocent people and took over cities
This event is important leading the Mongols into ruling Russia.
10.
MONGOLS RULE RUSSIA
In 1240, the Mongols attacked and demolished Kiev.
They rode under the leadership of Batu Khan.
Many inhabitants were killed.
Under Mongol Rule Russians had to follow all Mongolian customs and religons.
