BULLYING SCENARIO

Instead of re-inventing the wheel...
Here is a true scenario, with relevance to today's society, that did not end well.

SO...

I am looking at actions that would have resulted in a better outcome.

AMANDA TODD

I'M SURE YOU'VE HEARD THIS NAME BEFORE

But for the few that haven't...

HERE'S THE STORY

Amanda was a girl who lived in Canada as an only child with her parents.

Around 2009 to 2010 she began using a online program the allowed her to chat with other people across the internet via webcam.

She met someone anonymously who continued to sexually harass her for a year until she finally sent him a nude picture.

By using said picture, he blackmailed her into doing other things for him before sending the picture to all of her friends and spamming it across the internet.

Amanda became aware of it when police came to her door at 4:00am to inform her of the picture now circulating the internet.

She began experiencing
DEPRESSION

ANXIETY

And
PANIC DISORDER

Amanda and her family moved houses due to the previous occurrences.

She started to get involved with alcohol and drugs as a stress relief.

The same individual from Amanda's history of online chatting managed to track her down and again shared the picture with anyone associated with her at her new school.

SHE CHANGED HOUSES A SECOND TIME

She started contacting an old friend and met up.

The week after, Amanda was confronted at school by his girlfriend and fifteen other assailants where they physically abused her.

According to her parents, her dad found her hiding in a ditch.

A few days later, she attempted suicide by drinking bleach but was rushed to the hospital in time to have her stomach pumped.

When she returned home, she found abusive messages plaguing social media about her failed attempt, posted pictures of bleach and other messages mocking her.

For a third time, they moved for a fresh start. Unfortunately, the picture was again sent to everyone at her new school including teachers and parents.

As Amanda's mental state worsened she began to engage in self-mutilation. She also overdosed on medication and was sent to the hospital again for two days.

She took therapy lessons and counseling. She was taunted by students for her poor grades and often called a phsyco.

Becoming desperate, it was around this time that Amanda posted a 9 minute video on YouTube of her explaining what had happened by holding up cue-cards in front of the camera.

ONE MONTH LATER...

ON OCTOBER 10TH, 2010

AMANDA TODD WAS FOUND DEAD IN HER HOME AT THE AGE OF 15

IT WAS LATER CONFIRMED A SUICIDE

SO WHAT COULD SHE HAVE DONE?

She should have immediately blocked any person harassing her in any way.
You should not engage with anybody that has bad intentions. She should never have sent the photo.
And most of all...

She should have talked to her parents as soon as the harassment escalated.

Alcohol and drugs will never solve your problems, only add to them.

Some people would also argue that thoughts of suicide would have been another mistake. But, suicide is not chosen; it happens when pain exceeds resources for coping with pain. That basically means that it's a natural thing to think, when you're feeling enough pain to make you suicidal, your exceeding what you can cope with.
