PRESENTATION OUTLINE
THINK: Why do we need to build a reading culture in our school?
Brainstorm:
- What does a school reading culture look like?
- Are CR students reading?
- Who are our students' role models?
- Do as I say, not as i do?
- Add more...
PLC participants will add to this list during our first meeting.
Think: What does a school reading culture look like?
Teachers are the role models...
How can we model love of reading?
- posters of staff reading their favorite books
- make a list of what you have read this school year, summer, winter break, spring break, etc
- Post what you are currently reading, and encourage them to ask questions
More Ideas
- Book talk your favorite, recent children's books
- match books to your students
- Add your ideas
What do we do to turn readers off?
Readicide
- In Readicide, Kelly argues that American schools are actively (though unwittingly) furthering the decline of reading. Specifically, he contends that the standard instructional practices used in most schools are killing reading by:
Untitled Slide
- valuing the development of test-takers over the development of lifelong readers
- mandating breadth over depth in instruction
- requiring students to read difficult texts without proper support
Untitled Slide
- drowning great books with sticky notes, double-entry journals, and marginalia
- ignoring the importance of developing recreational reading;
