PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Building a safe Surrounding
I am Jessica Haslem and I live on a lake. The common emergencies in may area are: burns, CPR, first aid, and falls. Let me explain why, and what I can do to make the emergencies rare instead of common.
Burns:
For everyone, after being in the sun too long, you can get sunburn (red or reddish skin that is hot to the touch or painful, general fatigue, and mild dizziness. Other symptoms include blistering, peeling skin, swelling, itching, and nausea).
What can I do?
I can help myself and others apply sunscreen every hour to prevent sunburn.
CPR:
The little ones always have a higher chance of near drowning (almost dying from suffocating under water) and secondary drowning (delayed symptoms caused by inhaling water into the lungs while swimming).
What can I do?
I can make sure that everyone (including myself) is wearing life jackets. Particularly in deep places.
Learn CPR.
I can supervise the swimmers and ensure their safety.
I can find an extra adult to help supervise the swimmers and ensure their safety.
First Aid and Falls:
In my back yard, we have four levels of small concrete/rocky stairs. We often fall, trip, and slip; cutting our hands and feet, shoulders and knees, arms and legs, and sometimes, the head.
What can I do?
I can be there to provide support behind the person to make sure they don't slip.
I can always have a first aid kit nearby.
I can learn the skills needed to help keep the person alive while waiting for help.
By being aware of what can happen in your surroundings and by knowing what to do in any circumstance is just enough to build a safer surrounding!
