Beginning of Buddhism
In Buddhism they worship the Buddha. Buddhism is based on the teaching of Siddhartha Gautama. He was the prince who gave up his wealth and position to try to understand the meaning of life. Later when he began to teach what he had learned, he was called the Buddha, or enlightened one.

Buddha's life Teaching
Siddhartha was born a Hindu prince. A priest has predicted that he would become a wondering holy man. To prevent this, Siddhartha's father sheltered him. Siddhartha did not see old age, illness, death, or poverty until he was 29. When he finally did see such troubles, they upset him. He fled home to search for peace in a world of suffering.

Buddha's B-Day
On this day, Buddhists will traditionally visit their temples where they will participate in activities that may include singing hymns for the Buddha himself, for the Dharma (his teachings) and for the Sangha (his disciples). Many will also listen to the Buddha's teachings by attending readings of Buddhist scriptures or by taking part in a candle lighting ceremony or procession in the evening. Devotees may also leave offerings of flowers, incense and lights and in some temples there may be a small statue of the Buddha in the front, in a basin of water which allows devotees to pour water over the statue, as a symbol of spiritual cleansing.

The Dharma
After the Buddha died, his followers gathered his teaching to pass on to the others. These collective teachings are called the Dharma, which means the true nature of all things. The Dharma is often shown as a wheel.

The Eightfold Path involves right opinions, desires, speech, actions, job, effort, concentration, and mediation. This path could lead to nirvana, the end of suffering.

Four Noble Truths
For six years, Siddhartha starved himself, but this sacrifice did not help him find the answers he sought. Then he sat under a fig tree and mediated until he found understanding. This gave him insights to reality, which he called the four noble truths. First, existence, is suffering. Second, that condition comes from wanting wanting what someone else has or wanting life to be different. Third, people can stop suffering by not wanting. Fourth, people can stop wanting by following the eightfold path.
