  • In 1936, Bud Caldwell roams around the streets of Flint, MI without any family, looking for a place to stay after escaping his foster home.

RISING ACTION

  • At the beginning, Bud is sent to a foster home where he escapes after being tortured by them.
  • He stays in Flint, MI for a while and tries to get on a train to Chicago with his friend, Bugs, but it doesn't work.
  • Bud believes Herman E Calloway, a man on a flyer he has, is his father so he goes to look for him in Grand Rapids, MI.
  • On the way to Grand Rapids, he meets Lefty Lewis who he lies to saying he ran away from Herman. Lefty returns him to Grand Rapids.

RISING ACTION (CONT.)

  • After reaching Grand Rapids, Bud stays with Herman's band. Herman doesn't like Bud and doesn't believe they are related.
  • A little bit after starting to stay with them Bud shows them a picture of his mom, which leads to the Climax.

CLIMAX

  • Herman E. Calloway actually turns out to be Bud's grandfather.

FALLING ACTION

  • Following the band figuring out that Herman is Bud's grandfather, they decided Bud will live with them.
  • Steady Eddie gives Bud a saxophone that the entire band put some money in together to buy.
  • The book ends with Bud being happy to receive the instrument and him trying it out.

CONFLICTS OF THE STORY

  • Person vs Society - Bud doesn't have a place to live after leaving the Home
  • Person vs Nature - When Bud is locked within the shed, he is attacked by the bees.
  • Person vs. Self - After finding out Mrs. Hill had left, Bud conflicts with himself on what to do.
  • Person vs. Person - When Bud was getting into line late at the mission for food, the guard got at Bud.

  • Bud ends up living with Herman and his band.
  • Bud escapes the bees.
  • He decides to go to Grand Rapids in search of his father.
  • Another family pretends that Bud is part of their family and he was just using the bathroom and had just come back.
