PRESENTATION OUTLINE

BRIDGES

WE RELY ON BRIDGES EVERYDAY TO CROSS OVER RIVERS, VALLEYS, AND RAILROAD TRACKS.

BEAM

  • Simplest
  • Most inexpensive
  • Most support over huge distances
  • Able to stand great forces of nature

ADVANTAGES

  • Easy to build
  • Good strength
  • Difficult to damage

DISADVANTAGES

  • Weak in large distances
  • Cannot hold heavy load
  • Very costly (steel)

FLAT BRIDGE

AN EXAMPLE OF A BEAM BRIDGE-FLAT BRIDGE LOCATED IN JAMAICA.

ARCH

  • Popular type of style
  • Instead of the load pushing straight down the load is carried outward.

ADVANTAGES

  • Higher levels of resistance
  • Made from anything
  • Gets stronger the more they work

DISADVANTAGES

  • Long period of time to build
  • Extra maintenance
  • Cannot span over long distances

SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE

AN EXAMPLE OF AN ARCH BRIDGE IS LOCATED IN AUSTRALIA NEAR THE SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE.

SUSPENSION

  • Was the first and simplest bridge to build
  • Uses cable anchors to hold the piers into the ground

ADVANTAGES

  • Low budget
  • Multi-use
  • Easy to maintain

DISADVANTAGES

  • Too flexible
  • Load limitations
  • Needs time to sit after construction

GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE

AN EXAMPLE OF A SUSPENSION BRIDGE IS THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE IN SAN FRANCISCO.

TRUSS

  • Light-weight, but constructed stiff
  • Connected by triangular units
  • Support carries throughout the beams

ADVANTAGES

  • Strong
  • Used anywhere
  • Roadway can easily be placed on the bridge

DISADVANTAGES

  • Takes up too much space
  • Difficult to maintain
  • Needs to be a well thought out design
