I-35W MISSISSIPPI RIVER BRIDGE

BY FAITH MALONEY

I-35W MISSISSIPPI RIVER BRIDGE

  • Located in Minneapolis, Minnesota
  • It was an eight lane, steel truss arch bridge
  • This bridge was opened in November, 1967
  • On August 1, 2007, the bridge collapsed
  • It was replaced with: I-35W Saint Anthony Falls Bridge

The triangles used in this bridge are scalene triangles.
Some of the triangles in the design of this bridge are right triangles.

It evenly distributes a load.

Suspension Bridge
They make use of steel cables that support the deck.
They also transfer the weight to the ends of the bridge. Supporting cables are also needed to suspend the bridge from the main cables.

Cable-Stayed Bridge
Cables support the
weight of the deck
by running directly
from one or more towers to the deck.

Simple Truss Bridge
The frame, called a truss, sits on top or below the bridge deck.
The design allows
the weight to be distributed through the frame, so that
the bridge doesn't struggle with the weight as much.

Cantilever Truss Bridge
Made with two
beams or trusses that
are joined in the center
and are supported on piers.

Beam And Girder Bridges
They have two parts:
the beam and supports.
The longer the amount of beam between the supports, the weaker the bridge.
