What is a Paralegal?

  • A qualified person by experience, training or education.
  • Employed by various entities.
  • Retained by an attorney for a law office, corporation or government agency.
  • Paralegals are commonly known as legal assistants.

What do paralegals do?

  • Daily tasks vary for a paralegal depending on the area of law.
  • Family, Criminal, Contract, Corporate, Tort and Juvenile law.
  • Organize and conduct client interviews.
  • Conduct legal research.
  • Prepare legal documents for the attorney.

Education

  • A minimum total of 124 total credit hours.
  • BPS in Paralegal Studies requires 42 semester hours of LA courses.
  • Wills & Estates, Torts, Conflict and Resolution, Business Organization, etc
  • BPS majors must complete a minor that is approved by an academic adviser.

Salary

  • In 2009, paralegals earned an average of $54,859.00.
  • Paralegals that work for the Federal Government earned $62,400.00 in 2012.
